If you were a coffee shop regular, your month probably looks like this
Illustrative example. This is an illustrative example, not a real customer or a real cafe. No purchase history was used. The numbers are hypothetical and demonstrate how a small daily habit fits in a budget.
An illustrative coffee shop regular takes home $3,450 and gives coffee a dedicated $160 envelope, roughly $5.30 a day, funded honestly rather than hidden inside groceries.

The setup
$3,450 a month and a barista who starts your drink when you walk in, which is worth something that does not appear on any spreadsheet. This budget does not contain a lecture about coffee. The finance internet has been extremely rude about lattes for fifteen years and it has not made anyone rich. What it does contain is the actual number, written down, where you can look at it.
Where the money actually goes
Rent $1,200, utilities $150, groceries $360, dining $180, transit $110, phone $45, subscriptions $40, gym $45, clothes $80, fun $180, loans $250. Coffee gets its own $160, which is about $5.30 a day. Emergency fund $400 and retirement $250. Fourteen envelopes, adding to exactly $3,450.
The envelope that always blows up
Coffee, but only when it is hiding. Folded into groceries or dining, $160 is invisible and drifts toward $230 without anybody noticing, usually because a drink turns into a drink plus a pastry on the days you skipped breakfast. Given its own envelope, it stops drifting almost immediately. The number is not the problem. Not knowing the number is the problem.
How to fix it
Keep the envelope, do not cut it to zero, and check it around the 15th. If it is on pace, carry on with a clear conscience. If it is at $130 with two weeks to go, brew at home a few mornings and let the envelope recover. This is the entire technique. It works because it replaces guilt with arithmetic, and arithmetic is much easier to act on.
Common questions
Should I just quit buying coffee out?
Only if you want to. $160 a month is about 4.6 percent of take-home in this example, and the emergency fund and retirement lines are both funded. A budget that survives is worth more than a budget that is optimal and abandoned.
Why separate coffee from dining out?
Because they behave differently. Dining out is a few large decisions; coffee is twenty small automatic ones. Categories that behave differently are easier to control when they are counted separately.
Is this a real person?
No. The persona is fictional and every number is illustrative, not drawn from an actual customer.
