If you always overspend at the holidays, your month probably looks like this
Illustrative example. This is an illustrative example, not a real person or a real December. No spending records were used. Every number is hypothetical and shown to demonstrate the envelope math.
An illustrative holiday overspender takes home $3,600 and funds $305 a month year-round across gifts, holiday travel, hosting, and decorations so December arrives already paid for.

The setup
$3,600 a month and a January that arrives with a credit card statement shaped like a confession. Here is the thing everyone knows and nobody acts on: the holidays are not a surprise. They occur on the same dates every single year with extraordinary reliability. The reason December wrecks budgets is not that it is unpredictable, it is that it gets funded out of one month's income instead of twelve.
Where the money actually goes
Rent $1,200, utilities $160, groceries $420, dining $200, car $360, phone $50, subscriptions $35, fun $180. The holiday block runs all year at $305 a month: gifts $150, travel $100, food and hosting $40, decorations $15. Emergency fund $390 and retirement $300. Fourteen envelopes, adding to exactly $3,600.
The envelope that always blows up
Gifts, and specifically the list growing after the budget is set. You planned for eight people. Then there is a coworker exchange, a friend who gave you something first, a hostess gift, and two kids you forgot are old enough to notice. Holiday travel is the second offender, mostly because flights in late December are priced by people who know exactly how much you want to see your family.
How to fix it
Write the gift list in September with a dollar amount next to each name, then total it and divide by twelve. That number is your gifts envelope, and it is usually smaller than what you actually spend, which is the useful part. Book holiday travel early out of a funded envelope. By November the $1,200 is already sitting there and December becomes pleasantly boring.
Common questions
When should I start funding a holiday envelope?
January. Twelve months of $150 is $1,800 with no strain, while three months of $600 is a crisis. Starting late is still better than not starting, it just means each month has to carry more.
What if I get a year-end bonus?
Then the envelope becomes a backstop rather than the whole plan. But budgeting December around a bonus that is not guaranteed is how a good year and a bad year produce the same January statement.
Is this a real person's holiday spending?
No. It is fictional and illustrative. No individual's December was used to build this.
