Who this template is for

This set is for the November-to-January stretch, when a normal budget quietly breaks. It suits anyone who has finished a January with a credit card balance they did not plan for. The seasonal envelopes are large on purpose, and the trade is that savings and discretionary spending shrink for those months.

How to use it

Switch to this template for the holiday months, or better, run the seasonal envelopes as sinking funds all year at roughly 2% each and spend from the accumulated balance. Start with a written gift list including names and dollar amounts, then divide the Gifts envelope accordingly. When a name's amount is spent, that person's gift is done.

How to adjust it

If you host rather than travel, move the Travel to Family percentage into Holiday Food & Hosting. If you travel rather than host, do the reverse. Large gift lists usually mean lowering the amount per person rather than raising the envelope, because the envelope is what protects January.

Common mistakes

Shopping without a name-by-name list is the most reliable way to overspend, because the total is invisible until the statement arrives. Another is forgetting travel costs, which frequently exceed the gift budget. A third is treating a holiday bonus as unlimited rather than assigning it to envelopes the day it lands.

Common questions

How do I avoid holiday debt?

Decide the total first and divide it by name, then stop when each envelope is empty. Funding the seasonal envelopes throughout the year as sinking funds removes the pressure entirely.

How much should I spend on gifts?

This template uses 12% of one month's take-home pay for the gift envelope. What matters more than the percentage is deciding the total in advance and splitting it across a written list.

Should I use a holiday bonus for gifts?

You can, but assign it to envelopes the day it arrives. Unassigned bonus money tends to be spent twice: once mentally and once on a card.
