Who this template is for

This set suits people who abandoned detailed budgets because there were too many categories to maintain. Nine envelopes is few enough to check in under a minute, and the deliberate Buffer envelope means an odd expense that fits nowhere does not force you to redesign anything.

How to use it

Apply the percentages to monthly take-home pay and automate the Savings & Investing envelope as a transfer on payday so it never has to be a decision. Combine categories aggressively: all recurring services live in one envelope, all discretionary enjoyment lives in another. Review once a month rather than daily.

How to adjust it

The savings envelope is the shock absorber in both directions. In a high-cost-of-living city, housing may need 38% or more, which comes out of savings and fun rather than groceries. If your income rises, hold your spending envelopes flat in dollar terms and let the increase flow entirely into Savings & Investing.

Common mistakes

The main risk with few categories is that a combined envelope hides a problem: a Fun & Experiences envelope that is always empty by the tenth may be masking a specific habit worth splitting out temporarily. Another is skipping the buffer, which makes every unplanned expense feel like a failure of the system.

Common questions

How few envelopes can a budget have?

This template runs on nine, which is enough to separate fixed bills, food, savings, and discretionary spending. Fewer than about six tends to hide the trade-offs that make budgeting useful.

Is a 25 percent savings rate realistic?

It depends on your housing cost and income. If 25% is out of reach, start where you can and raise the envelope by one percentage point at a time as income grows or fixed costs drop.

What goes in the buffer envelope?

Anything that does not have a home: a parking ticket, a wedding gift, a replacement charger. It exists so small oddities do not require new categories.
